This Autumn, we find ourselves experiencing an Indian Summer. Today, October 24th, it is warm and sunny here in Cupertino. However living in the Bay Area, we know that the upcoming rainy and stormy season is inevitable. Are you prepared for the impending weather change?
Here are a few easy steps you can take to prepare for the Winter and prevent a potential leak in your roof, or avoid an expensive repair later:
- Trim back any trees that hang over or cover the roof.
- Use a blower or broom to clean all debris off the roof. Never use a pressure washer on your roof!
- Clean debris from all downspouts using water pressure from a garden hose.
- Then, perform a visual inspection of the roof by either walking on the roof or using binoculars from the ground. Look for missing or cracked composition shingles, holes in shakes or wood shingles where the black felt roof paper is exposed.
- If you find any of the above deficiencies, then it is time for a professional insoection and repair.
If you catch these early warning signs, you can often preven a small problem turning into a huge headache. If you have a tile or flat roof, it is recommended that you hire a professional for the above maintenance.
