Atherton

The town of Atherton is a thickly wooded gem in the heart of the San Francisco peninsula.  The beginning lines of the town’s general plan state, “the Town of Atherton desires, insofar as possible, to preserve its character as a scenic, rural, thickly-wooded, residential area with abundant open space and with streets designed primarily as scenic routes rather than for speed of travel.”

Atherton began as a flag stop called “Fair Oaks” on the railway between San Francisco and San Jose for the convenience of wealthy land owners who maintained large estates in the area.  Originally part of Menlo Park, the residents decided to incorporate separately in 1923, when it became clear that the town’s desire to maintain an exclusive, business-free environment required independence from Menlo Park to the south.  To this day, Atherton remains free of business and industry establishments.

The town still resembles the “Plain of Oaks” that its founders envisioned with native live oaks, white oaks, bays, redwoods, cedars, pines and other ornamental trees covering the town.  Nestled with these trees are numerous large estates and luxurious homes.  In 2005, Atherton’s 94027 zip code was identified by Forbes magazine as the most affluent ZIP in the U.S.
