Known as the “Capital of Silicon Valley”, San Jose is the third largest city in California. San Jose was originally founded in 1850, and since then has been the county seat of Santa Clara County. Residents and City Officials of San Jose boast that they have the nation’s best public safety record, which they do. As well as being safe, San Jose has a large economic base, as it is located in the heart of Silicon Valley.

San Jose combines easy access to other cities in the Bay Region with its central location and extensive public transportation systems. San Jose is fifty miles south of the bay city of San Francisco, where events, opportunities, and activities of all kinds may be found. Oakland is thirty-five miles to the northeast, and the beautiful cities of Monterey and Carmel are only an hour south of San Jose. Bus and rail public transportation systems connect residents to areas within the city and outside the city on a regular basis. The San Jose International Airport provides domestic, international, and regional flights regularly as well.

The dry, sunny, and warm climate of San Jose makes it great for year round recreational and outdoor opportunities. The beauty of San Jose and the Silicon Valley provide ample chances for boating, kayaking, golf, hiking, skiing, and rafting year round. Additionally, several community centers, city pools, and other programs provide ample recreational opportunities for young and old alike.

The city is home to many performance arts, including Opera San Jose, Symphony Silicon Valley, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose (recognized as the largest and most talented youth theatre company in the nation), the San Jose Repertory Theatre, and American Musical Theatre of San Jose. San Jose also is home to the San Jose Museum of Art, one of the nation’s premiere Modern Art museums. In addition, the annual Cinequest Film Festival in downtown has grown to over 60,000 attendees per year, becoming an important festival for independent films.
