San Mateo

Originally home to an Ohlone Indian settlement, parts of San Mateo have been inhabited for over 4000 years. In the 1850’s San Mateo became popular as a location for weekend and summer homes for wealthy residents of San Francisco. Drawn by the area’s mild Mediterranean climate, San Mateo soon became home to many large and historically important mansions. Incorporated in 1894, San Mateo has grown into one of the larger cities on the bay area peninsula.

Now home to numerous high-tech companies, San Mateo still manages to maintain it’s small town character. The downtown commercial area has been recently revitalized and residents now enjoy first-class dining and entertainment options. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, the city is home to numerous beautiful parks. One highlight is Coyote Point, a 670-acre park complex that juts into the San Francisco Bay. Besides picnic and play areas, the park includes large lawn areas, numerous hiking trails, a marina and yacht club, a fishing jetty, and a large nature museum.

Residents are able to enjoy these outdoor attractions year-round due to the areas temperate weather.
