Silicon Valley voters shot down redevelopment of the Vallco Mall back in November. However, that didn't stop the Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel from continuing their plans. Construction of the 148 room extended-stay hotel is currently underway. Completion of this Silicon Valley real estate project is expected to take place within the next two years.
Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel
In October 2014, the City of Cupertino approved plans for the 102,700 square foot Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel. One reason for its approval was that it would provide an opportunity for guests to stay as long as 30 days. Extended stay hotels are scarce in the Silicon Valley. The Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel helps fill the void.
This project comes just in time. Currently, construction of the Apple Campus 2 project is underway just across the highway from the Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel location. While the location of the hotel may be perfect for Apple employees, other guests visiting our Cupertino community have a place to stay as well. Besides business people, families waiting for their new homes to be move-in ready might take advantage of the extended-stay option the Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel offers.
Part of the Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel construction includes clearing 115 trees from the area. Of these trees, three are dead and 79 are in poor condition. The hotel's development plans involve replacing all 115 trees the project removes. Parking will consist of 159 spaces, with some surface parking and an additional 85 stalls underground.
While the rest of the Vallco Mall shuts down, the AMC movie theater, Ice Center ice rink and Bowlmor bowling alley remain open. All three locations are accessible outside of the mall. Sand Hill Property Co. stated that these businesses all hold current leases with them. The company intends to honor these leases in their entirety. There are currently no plans as to what Sand Hill will be doing with the rest of the Vallco Mall property at this time. Could construction of the Cupertino Hyatt House Hotel make the Vallco Mall property valuable Silicon Valley real estate once again? We'll have to wait to see what happens.
